HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Learning Modules

Objectives

  • Understand the purpose of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
  • Describe the role of the pharmacist in dispensing PEP for HIV in optimizing HIV prevention strategies.
  • Differentiate between patients to whom it is appropriate to dispense PEP and to whom it is inappropriate.
  • Outline the common dosages, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, adverse events, drug interactions, and warnings/precautions and counseling recommendations for PEP medications. 
  • Discuss the difference between HIV stigma and HIV discrimination and assess the negative effects of stigma.
  • Review the NC standing order for Pharmacist-Initiated PEP and the supporting documents.
